Getting Creative with the Business Card

A fun new trend seen in the business world -- for once -- is not in the digital realm. Not completely, that is. As unemployment lingers and people continue to search for ways to differentiate themselves from their job-hungry competition, the business card has been receiving new levels of attention. People are getting creative with their calling cards, using circuit boards, USB plugins, and brow-raising design. Some designs are based on the layout of a Facebook profile, or even the iPhone.

Now, I'm sure we can all see how this relates to marketing, but for the sake of blog content, let's break it down. We are business students. We are in -- or soon to be in -- the job market. We are marketers (or future marketers). It's pretty important that we are able to market ourselves. How do we market ourselves? Well, in many ways, but one of the first impressions we make is through the business card. And that piece of information is permanent; it stays with the person you give it to for as long as they choose to keep it. It would be wise for us to put some effort into these professional mementos, because you never know who you will meet and where a craftily-composed business card may land you someday. Plus, with so many on the job hunt, it's one more way to stand out from the competition. What better way to showcase our marketing savvy than to market ourselves successfully?

The ways in which the business card can be reinvented is limited only by our imaginations, and about six square inches. So think about ways in which you might be able to leave a lasting impression by way of your business cards.
